Desmond DAC-100B Oversized Skeleton Quick Release Clamp Preview

Desmond DAC-100B QR Clamp
Looking for an Arca-Swiss compatible quick release clamp with extra long jaws yet maintaining a minimal weight?
Well the 100 mm Desmond DAC-100B might be what you are after. It's oversized but due to its skeletal design weighs just 111 gr!

The "B" at the end of the model name denotes that this is the second iteration of a DAC-100 QR clamp, released last year.

As much as its predecessor, the Desmond DAC-100B design is an elongation of the successful DAC-X1 Skeleton QR clamp (review) we have seen a couple of years ago.

The original DAC-100 was closer to the DAC-X1 with shallower safety screw relief grooves, which however do not allow a plate or rail with safety stop screws to travel close to the center screw inside the clamp.

This was actually the purpose of the release of the redesigned DAC-100B which allows a plate equipped with safety stop screws to travel deep into the clamp close to the center hole, almost as much as the smaller DAC-X1.

The clamp
Manufacturer Specification:

Usual to Desmond, the DAC-100B is made totally out of Aluminium with no rubber parts. A very elaborate design with curved beams instead of the usual flat surfaces.

The long jaws of the DAC-100B are held together by the butterfly shaped beams. Long safety stop screw relief openings on the sides are reinforced by one brace at either side, stabilizing the clamp from flex under load.
The center hole is countersunk and also threaded 3/8"-16. The clamp is accompanied by a steel bushing for conversion from 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 thread.
Both clamp jaws are laser engraved with decimal scales, featuring short lines in 1 mm increments. Longer lines with digits are set in 5mm increments. Zero (0) defines the center of the clamp jaws while numbering increases from the center, outwards.
On the front side of the steady jaw exist a yellow bull's eye type bubble level, attached by two M3 hex cap screws.
The 33mm long, captive screw knob is of one piece design, with a grooved surface offering good grip even with gloves.

The bottom side of the DAC-100B is quite simple, or empty I could say, as there is very little metal left just to keep the jaws opposite to eac other. The center hole has cross grooves in order to allow for anti-twist bosses found on almost all ball heads.
The bubble level holder has a small hole underneath in case the bubble spirit level needs replacement sometime in the future.
Although a 100 mm clamp may well be considered a specialized item, do not let the clamp size scare you expecting a high price. Desmond manages once again to offer an innovative product just under $ 30 !

I hope you found the information useful, thank you for viewing.
