As most of our readers probably know Hejnar PHOTO has created a broad selection of Linear Motion focusing macro rails and/or macro stages in the past 10 years or more.
The new model that has drawn our attention is a Linear Motion Micrometer screw focusing or micro rail being distinguished by the addition of Digital Micrometer Scales Screen.
The basic MS4 model introduced in 2012 incorporated a Micrometer Head for the first time, which gave it an extra fine graduation of 0.01mm !
Now the addition of a Digital Micrometer Screen raises the MS4-1DS at the top of the Hejnar line of macro / micro rails, with an ultra fine graduation of 0.001mm !!! and in direct competition with the top brands.
The MS4-1DS Rail structure
The base rail, the carriage structure and clamp are made from Black hard coat anodized Aluminium, but moving parts of the slider are made from Stainless Steel and Wear & Water-Resistant Delrin® Acetal Resin ( see Polyoxymethylene ).
The focusing rail has a length of 6.3" (16 cm) while its total length with Micrometer Head and Digital Micrometer Screen is 12" (30.48 cm). It is 2.18" (5,54 cm) wide by 2.5" (6,35 cm) thick including the quick release clamp. Total Weight 2 lb (915 gr).
The Mitutoyo Micrometer Head has a 0-25mm range of movement and a fine graduation of 0.001mm. The Micrometer head can be oriented in any direction (default orientation is with scale facing up).
The Quick Release Clamp
The slider carriage is equipped with a Hejnar Photo F72b 2.375" (6 cm) long Arca Swiss® compatible Quick Release clamp, with embedded bubble spirit level. (b at the end stands for long black knob).
The clamp is retained on the slider by a 1/4"-20 flat head screw with hex socket, which can be easily removed, so as the quick release clamp may be lifted and its screw knob be reoriented by 90 degrees.
The clamp alignment is aided by a dowel pin, which may be moved to any of the four holes around the center hole so the clamp points to any four positions suitable to the users needs.
Then the clamp is securely fixed again with the 1/4"-20 center mounting screw.
The bottom rail is equipped with an Arca Swiss® compatible dovetail , so it can be used with any head with an Arca compatible clamp.
Nonetheless, and extra 1/4"-20 tapped hole exists on the central brace of the base rail so the MS4-1DS can be mounted on any pod with an 1/4"-20 stud.
M3 safety stop screws are placed at either end of the base rail to protect from accidental fall-offs due to inappropriately closed QR clamps.
Usage and Load
Using the MS4-1DS Linear Motion Micrometer adjusting micro rail, a rough camera to subject distance can be performed moving the base rail within the mounting clamp and then make extra fine adjustments using the Micrometer.
The Rail will work in vertical orientation (perpendicular to the ground) with a load up to 10 lb (4,53 kg), while in horizontal orientation (parallel to the ground) the load can be increased up to 15 lb (6,80 kg).
For the record, all required screws and Allen hex wrenches are included in the package.
Conclusion
The choice of materials, manufacturing quality, extra fine micrometric adjustment and last but not least, Arca Swiss® compatibility make this Linear Focusing rail really outstanding.
The base rail dovetail is compatible with Kirk®, R.R.S.®, Arca-Swiss®, and almost all other Arca-Swiss style Quick release clamps.
