Despite the fact that Hejnar Photo has already a full series of Nodal Slides / Rails with integrated clamp, the E3, coming at 6, 7 and 8 inches long, all had decimal scales engraved on their top surface, due to the 1/2 inch thickness.
Sometimes demand set the pace though, and since Chris Hejnar is very anxious to meet clients demands, Hejnar Photo has just introduced a new series of Nodal Slides with integrated clamp, the E04.
This new series starts out with two models the E4-70 and the E4-80. The model names declare also the the length of 7 and 8 inches respectively, but not the actual difference, being the increase in thickness at 5/8 of an inch.

This new series starts out with two models the E4-70 and the E4-80. The model names declare also the the length of 7 and 8 inches respectively, but not the actual difference, being the increase in thickness at 5/8 of an inch.
The higher side profile at 5/8 of an inch, besides being stronger, allows for laser engraving the decimal scales on the sides of the rails instead of the top, which was the point after all.
The Nodal Slides
Otherwise, both models maintain the good old Hejnar quality standards, enhancing rigidity and torsional stiffness but increasing total weight a little bit. Still not too much, since the E4-70 is 34 gr heavier and the E4-80 only 22 gr heavier than their E3 series counterparts.
The E4-70 measures exactly 7 inches ( 17.78 cm ) from the middle of the QR clamp (point 0 of the decimal scale) to the front edge. Total length of the rail excluding the clamp jaw is 7.3 inches (18.54 cm) as mentioned in the table bove.
The E4-70 features a 14 cm decimal scale starting from the middle of the QR clamp and ending at the middle of the thread at the front of the 9 cm captive slot. Nonetheless, the usual large Hejnar bubble level is eye catching at the front edge.
Same stands for the E4-80 lengthwise, which measures exactly 8 inches ( 20.32 cm ) from the middle of the QR clamp (point 0 of the decimal scale) to the front edge. Total length of the main body without the clamp jaw is 8.3 inches (21.08 cm) as mentioned once again in the product specs above.
The longer E4-80 features evidently a 2 cm longer decimal scale of 16 cm, starting in the same manner from the middle of the QR clamp and ending at the middle of the thread at the front of the also longer 11 cm captive slot. The large bubble level here too.
Common Characteristics
The design of the underside of the rails does not differ too much from previous models maintaining the deep hollowed out pattern in order to minimize weight as possible.
Two M3 safety stop screws come pre-installed as usual (with appropriate Allen hex key included as shown in the first photos above, in case one wishes to remove them).
A closer look shows that the rear M3 safety stop screw is located in the middle of the QR clamp in line with the 0 position of the decimal scale as already mentioned above.
One 1/4"-20 tapped hole resided on the crossbar in front of the QR clamp, which permits the mounting of the rail on a 1/4" stud directly.
The hole behind the M3 screw is intended for the Screw Knob set screw, making it captive.
Nothing changes also for the QR clamp jaws tongue in pocket design, which design warranties linear motion and protection of the clamp parts from dirt and dust.
Both QR clamp jaws sport decima scales in 1 mm increments and digits every 1 cm counting outwards.
It's obvious from the last two photos that the longitudinal decimal scales start with point "0" from the middle of the QR clamp helping a lot when measuring the NPP point offset as I have explained in previous reviews of Hejnar Nodal Slides as the most recent Hejnar PHOTO E030-60 6" Updated Nodal Slide Rail Review.
