Just 4 months after the release of the elongated 10" Hejnar PHOTO MS5P_10 Linear Motion Lead Screw Macro Rail, here comes a nice announcement from Hejnar Photo regarding its updated KS version, which in my opinion is a major improvement.
The changes concentrated in the handling of the Lead Screw where enlarged knobs and scales make the movement of the sliding carriage easier and more precise.
In all other aspects the 10" focusing stage is absolutely the same as its predecessor with only a slight increase in total length due to the larger knobs.
The Rail structure
Same as all the latest Hejnar Macro stages the outer shell is aluminum with a 0.002" thick ceramic coating for added corrosion resistance and endurance at a temperature range of –400° F to +375° F (-240° C to +190° C ).
Although 10" long, the MS5P-10-KS maintains the structural rigidity of its shorter siblings where the width enhances these characteristics, plus it comes with the wider Hejnar F63b QR clamp by default, as we'll see later on.
The lead screw is driven by two enlarged knobs one at each end of the screw, providing access from both sides. The new knobs feature knurled edges with familiar Hejnar diamond pattern for precise handling while they are aslo equipped with hand cranks for faster turning for relocation if needed.
Further I should repeat that the carriage features Self Aligning Linear Sleeve Bearings. Having a nonabrasive, chemical-resistant PTFE liner they don't require any additional lubrication, consisting them virtually maintenance free.
Furthermore, fast positioning of the slider on the lead screw, can also be effected by pressing the chrome slider release push button shown below, just under the carriage.
The F63b Quick Release Clamp
The Hejnar Photo F63b QR clamp is well known to our followers since it has been mentioned many times in the past. It is compatible with virtually any Arca style Quick Release plate. Since it is not integrated into the carriage, it can be dismounted and mounted in any orientation in 90° increments, but also be used on a ball head or other equipment at will if removed.
The larger Hejnar Photo F63b sports two extra mounting / alignment screws within the safety relief grooves. (b at the end of the model name stands for long black knob).
In the picture above the clamp is attached on the carriage by one 1/4"-20 flat head screw through its center hole. Two M4 flat head screws can be used as alignment screws on the sides of the center screw at any orientation.
All screws can be easily loosened by the included Allen hex keys in order to be reoriented at users will, in 90° increments, so as to place the clamp jaws either parallel or perpendicular to the slider and the protruding srew-knob at any side the user finds more convenient.
When the clamp is mounted perpendicularly to the slider, then the large clamp area becomes a convenient wide platform for lateral adjustment of the camera within the clamp.
The Arca Dovetail
The bottom rail of the MS5P-10-KS is equipped with an Arca Swiss® compatible dovetail, so it can be used with any head equipped with an Arca compatible clamp, while the existence of both sizes of 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 tapped holes located on the center cross brace at the bottom of the rail, allow for direct mounting on a pod with either type of stud.
When the Macro Stage is mounted on a Tripod Head equipped with an Arca-Swiss® compatible clamp via its dovetail, the camera to subject distance can be roughly adjusted by moving the whole stage within the ball head clamp limits slid on its bottom Rail and further engage in extra-fine adjustments using the lead screw knobs.
The MS5P-10-KS comes with M3 safety stop screws pre-installed at both ends of the bottom rail, thus not allowing the large stage to fall off from a loosely tightened quick release clamp.
As quoted by Hejnar Photo, the Macro Stage can operate in vertical orientation (perpendicular to the ground) with a load up to 10 lb (4,53 kg), while in horizontal orientation (parallel to the ground) the load can be increased up to 15 lb (6,80 kg).

The MS5P-10-KS features the same lead screw offering 1.06 mm travel (0.0417") per one rotation of the knob(s) with a maximum travel distance of 160 mm (6.3 inch).
Nonetheless, now the added scales allow for fine calculations since each scale division corresponds to 0.01 mm (0.004 inch) of carriage movement. Great Job!
