Just a week after the announcement of the modular Sunwayfoto PCL-R5 Custom L Bracket for Canon EOS R5 and R6 mirrorless cameras, a solid one piece model was also introduced, the PSLO-R5 we see here intended mostly for the US market.
Except for being lighter and some minor details the dimensions and shape of this L bracket are almost identical to the PCL-R5, while the design of the anti-twist mechanism reminds me a lot of the Sunwayfoto Custom L Bracket for Canon EOS R the PCL-R.
As I have mentioned in the PCL-R article extensively, Sunwayfoto engineers had to choose between full versatility and function. Since this is an one piece design, they had maintained full alignment of base and side dovetails, allowed access to all side ports but compromised a little the full tilting of the LCD screen when extended. Full tilting of the LCD screen is effected through an opening on the rear side of the vertical plate.
Somehow, it allows for the articulated LCD screen to be extended out, or be tilted up - down, or turned forward for vloggers but this has to be done before fully extending it out.

Standard characteristics shared among the Sunwayfoto plates and L brackets are met by the PCL-R too. It is precision CNC machining from aircraft-grade aluminium followed by high quality hard coat surface anodizing.
The PCLO-R5 L bracket is made of one piece aluminum block maintaining utmost rigidity. The large bottom plate, much like the PCL-R5 has no raised lips either the front or the rear, but a set screw with a pin as we shall see later, plus a rubber pad which together prevent the bracket from twisting.
The usual extra 1/4"-20 tapped hole and a strap loop are also present.
The vertical side plate besides the gap for the LCD screen, is shaped appropriately to allow for easy opening of the side connector port covers.
The usual lens centering Φ marks are placed a little awkwardly since the one on the base plate is found on the rear, while the one on the vertical plate, due to the LCD screen gap, is found at the front side.
As forementioned the side plate is placed exactly in line with the base plate with aligned dovetails in order to allow for changes in camera orientation without need for other corrections, even focusing.
Two M3 safety screws are found on either end of both the base and the vertical Arca style dovetail plates to safeguard against accidental drops from a semi-closed clamp.
The camera mounting screw is captive and larger featuring a D-Ring as well as a slot for easier tightening described in detail in Sunwayfoto QRS-01 Hinged D-Ring 1/4"-20 Screw. A set screw with a pin, next to the mounting screw, provides anti-twisting.
Both the mounting screw and the set screw slide within their own captive slots, of equal length, thus enabling the movement of the L bracket away from the camera side enough to accept cables with larger plugs when clamped in portrait orientation.
The extra 1/4"-20 tapped holes on the side plate facilitate direct mounting of pods or the attachment of accessories.
Mounting the Bracket on the Camera
The PCLO-R5 fits tightly on either of the EOS R5 or R6 cameras as is very illustrated below, protecting the camera body and of course to fulfill the primary task of an L bracket enabling the camera to be mounted in landscape or portrait orientation without changing the perspective.
The side connector ports and their respective doors are fully accessible. Same goes for USB or other large connector plugs that have another 2 cm of clearance, when moving the vertical side plate away from the camera side.
The PCLO-R5 follows the innovation introduced by the PCL-R5 L Bracket and is equipped with 3 bubble levels that can aid the camera leveling in 3 different axes.
Accessories like a magic arm, a Mobile Bracket or microphones and other accessories are easily attached on the vertical side plate, utilizing the extra 1/4"-20 tapped holes.
Package Contents
The PCLO-R5 package, besides the L bracket it also contains all necessary screws and tools. In this case we have 4 x M3 safety stop screws for the base and side plates, 1 x 1/4"-20 captive set screw, 1 x Sunwayfoto QRS-01 Hinged D-Ring 1/4"-20 camera mounting screw, two rubber washers and 2 x Allen wrenches one 2.5 mm for the M3 screws and one 4 mm for the 1/4"-20 screw.
All parts are included in a velvet protective bag with draw-string closure.
Note: By the end of 2017 the geometry of all Sunwayfoto Arca style dovetails has changed becoming more compatible. Therefore, the PCLO-R5 by following the latest Sunwayfoto standards is compatible with almost all Arca style clamps including RRS lever release clamps.
